Head of Eurodiplomacy Kaja Kallas: “The EU is closely following the situation in Venezuela. The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr. Maduro lacks legitimacy and has advocated for a peaceful transition. In all circumstances, the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected. We call for restraint. The safety of EU citizens in the country is our top priority.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen: “We are closely following the situation in Venezuela. We support the people of Venezuela and are in favor of a peaceful and democratic transition. Any decision must be in line with international law and the UN Charter”.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer: “I want to start by establishing the facts. I intend to speak to President Trump and to our allies. I can say with all certainty that we were not involved in the operation… and I maintain and believe, as always, that we must all abide by international law.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry: “The Chinese side expresses its deep shock and strongly condemns the US use of military force against a sovereign state and its actions against its president. Such hegemonic actions by the US constitute a flagrant violation of international law, an infringement on Venezuela’s sovereignty and a threat to peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Chinese side strongly objects to this. We call on the U.S. side to abide by international law and the provisions of the UN Charter, and to stop encroaching on the sovereignty and security of other countries.”
Russian Foreign Ministry: “This morning, the US committed an act of armed aggression against Venezuela. This is a matter of deep concern and condemnation. The pretexts given to justify such actions are untenable. Ideologized animosity has taken precedence over business pragmatism and the willingness to build relations of trust and predictability. Actions such as the detention of Maduro, if they actually took place, represent an unacceptable attack on the sovereignty of an independent state, respect for which is a key principle of international law”.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro: “The Colombian government condemns the act of aggression against the sovereignty of Venezuela and Latin America. Internal conflicts between peoples must be resolved peacefully by those peoples themselves. That is the principle of self-determination of peoples, which is at the heart of the United Nations system. I call on the people of Venezuela to find ways of civil dialog and national unity. Without sovereignty, there is no nation. Peace is the way, and dialogue among peoples is the foundation of national unity. Dialogue and dialogue again – that is our position”.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum: “The Government of Mexico strongly condemns and rejects the military action taken in recent hours unilaterally by the U.S. armed forces against targets in the territory of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in clear violation of Article 2 of the UN Charter. Based on the principles of its foreign policy and commitment to peace, Mexico urges respect for international law and the principles of the UN Charter, as well as the cessation of all acts of aggression against the government and people of Venezuela”
Iranian Foreign Ministry: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the US military attack on Venezuela and the gross violation of the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of this country… The US armed aggression against an independent UN member state is a gross violation of regional and international peace and security. Its consequences will affect the entire system of international relations and further undermine and weaken the world order based on the UN Charter”.
