It will be the first bridge built across the Prut in 60 years.
“This is the most important transport structure ever built across the Prut, which will connect Romania and the Republic of Moldova via the highway crossing the Carpathians (Uniri Autostrada, A8) and the highway to Chisinau, part of the trans-European transport network,” said Irinel Ionel Scriosteanu, State Secretary of the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
The works are being carried out on both banks of the Prut according to the agreed schedule, he noted during his visit to the construction site on the closing day of 2025.
At the first stage, traffic will be established on the nearby national roads, and later, after receiving financing under the European SAFE program, a highway to Ungheni, Romania, will be built. In parallel, the Moldovan authorities are working on a feasibility study for the continuation of this highway to Chisinau.
The financing is provided by non-refundable European funds worth more than 151.68 million Romanian lei without VAT (approximately 35 million euros or about 700 million Moldovan lei) within the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program.
