On December 23, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the Regulation on the “Register of Geographical Names”, which creates a single, official and up-to-date source of this information at the national level.
The information system will be a digital platform that collects, stores and provides official data on standardized names of settlements, rivers, plains or other geographical objects.
The online platform will preserve all geographical names, including historical names; ensure the preservation of cultural and geographical identity; prevent unauthorized changes and provide access to reliable historical information. Thus, the online portal rdg.gov.md, scheduled to be launched next year, will make it possible to identify the former names of settlements, rivers or other geographical objects used in old documents and maps.
Quick access to accurate and up-to-date data will facilitate decision-making in areas such as urban planning, infrastructure, emergencies and land use. In addition, bureaucratic procedures as well as time and resources spent on manual processes will be significantly reduced.
The approval of the Regulation will enable the integration of the “Register of Geographical Names” into the general public infrastructure and ensure its compatibility with the MPass, MConnect, MLog and MSign platforms. At the same time, the system will meet the requirements of the INSPIRE Directive, ensuring compatibility with European spatial data standards.
Data will be available to public institutions, the private sector and citizens. For companies in areas such as logistics, tourism, transportation or spatial planning, fast and efficient access to geographical names will greatly facilitate decision-making and project planning.
