Government reshuffle: who came to Customs

Radu Vrabie

The decision to appoint him was made after the former head of the customs authority, Alexandru Iacub, left the post just a year after his appointment. Prior to this appointment, Radu Vrabie managed projects for the implementation of the €1.9 billion EU-Moldova Development Plan, and previously served as deputy director of USAID’s Structural Reform Program.

Introducing him, new Finance Minister Adrian Gavrilice emphasized Radu Vrabie’s experience in managing structural reforms and international projects. But he also has diplomatic experience, in this regard he managed the programs of the Foreign Policy Association for several years. Vrabie was also a manager in the international company British American Tobacco Moldova.

His participation in international programs was mainly related to the modernization of customs. In particular, with the development of the trade.gov.md portal, the eTIR project, the creation of the Institute of Authorized Economic Operators, and other digital initiatives.

The new director of the Customs Service promises to “contribute to the acceleration of the CU reform and digitalization of customs processes in order to harmonize procedures with European standards to bring Moldova closer to the economic space of the European Union”.

It should be noted that the former head of the Customs Service, Alexandru Iacub, was promoted to the post of deputy secretary-general of the government, Alexei Buzu.
