Petroleum products account for 41% of Moldova’s energy consumption

The National Bureau of Statistics published the Energy Balance of RM for 2024. According to it, the structure of final energy consumption emphasizes the country’s high dependence on oil products, and also shows a gradual increase in the share of renewable sources.

In 2023, the main types of energy carriers used are: petroleum products with a share of 41%; biofuels and waste – 21%; natural gas – 15%; electricity – 14%; thermal energy – 7% and coal – 2%.

The data suggest that petroleum products continue to dominate energy consumption, while biofuels (including firewood) and waste are increasing their role, and coal has the smallest share. Natural gas and electricity remain important sources, maintaining a balance between conventional and clean energy.

The structure of final energy consumption by sector shows that the trade and utilities sector consumes most of the country’s energy resources.

In 2023, final energy consumption by sector is as follows: trade and utilities – 43%; residential sector (population) – 32%; transportation – 9%; agriculture, forestry and fisheries – 10%; industry and construction – 6%.

The data reflect national energy dynamics: the trade and utilities sector dominates consumption, followed by population, and industry and construction have the smallest share.
