Small and medium-sized businesses form the backbone of the capital’s economy

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for 99.1% of all enterprises in Chisinau and provide more than 334 thousand jobs or 61.6% of the total number of jobs in Moldova, Logos Press reported.

Small and medium-sized businesses form the backbone of the capital’s economy

This data was announced at a meeting of the Chisinau Municipal Council by the head of the Main Department of Economy, Trade and Tourism Roman Vitiuc.

According to him, at the end of last year, more than 41 thousand companies from this sector were operating in the capital. In 2024, the Chisinau municipality recorded the highest growth of the SME sector in the last five years, which amounted to 6.9% compared to the previous year.

The total sales revenue of these enterprises exceeded 500 billion lei, which represents 75% of the turnover of all economic entities in the country.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2024, SMEs accounted for 99.2% of the total number of reporting companies in the country as a whole (similar to 2023). The average number of employees of SMEs amounted to 356.0 thousand people, accounting for 65.5% of the total average number of employees of companies (compared to 65.3% in 2023).
