Sergey Koretsky, chairman of the company’s board of directors, believes that this cooperation can go beyond simple trade deals – it should be about the realization of joint projects within the framework of a resource agreement with the United States.
As noted by the Economic Pravda news and analysis website with a reference to the Bloomberg agency, the share of US LNG in Ukrainian imports is currently less than 10 percent. This year, Naftohaz has already imported more than 400m cu.m. of US LNG to Ukraine.
These deliveries are carried out within the framework of a partnership with Polish state-owned ORLEN. The liquefied gas arrives at sea terminals in Poland and Lithuania, then undergoes regasification and enters the Ukrainian GTS through the Polish border.
Koretsky said the devastation, which wiped out 42% of daily production earlier this year, is forcing Ukraine to import 5.8 billion cubic meters of gas in 2025 – just under half of the 13.2 billion cubic meters it needs to stockpile ahead of the heating season.
Koretsky believes that while continued fighting is likely to limit the size and types of investments, Naftogaz cannot “just sit and wait.”
In particular, Naftogaz has proposed ten projects in the field of production and energy efficiency, which could be the first under the resources agreement with the United States. At the same time, the head of the Ukrainian operator urged Western partners to use the existing licenses.
For example, the Oleska field in western Ukraine, where Chevron intended to operate, is still available, Koretsky said. “If Chevron, which is very well versed in this topic, or any other companies with experience in shale gas development pay attention to this project in western Ukraine, we will be very happy,” he said.
