In general, the population in 2024 compared to 2014 decreased by 13%. The largest decrease in the share of the population was recorded in the age groups 35-40 years old. The share of people aged 60-69 increased by 4.6 percentage points.

According to Snezhana Nashko, deputy head of the Population Census Department of the National Bureau of Statistics, “everyone is aware of the natural process of demographic aging in which the Republic of Moldova finds itself.

In 2024 there will be 89 men per 100 women, while in 2014 there were 92 men per 100 women. Up to the age of 20, men predominate, but the ratio changes with age, also due to life expectancy.

Among the optimistic results, the median age of the population increased by 3.1 years from 2014 to 40.6 years, compared to 37.5 years in 2014. In rural areas, the average age increased more noticeably – by about 4.4 years compared to 2014.

Recall that the state authorities returned the law on the gradual increase in the retirement age, which began in 2017. Now men retire at the age of 63, women – at 61.5 years. From 2028, the retirement age will be unified and will be 63 years.

As previously reported by Logos Press with reference to data from the National Social Insurance Fund, at the end of the first half of this year, the total number of recipients of pensions, social benefits and compensations amounted to 671,597 people, of whom 530,062 receive retirement pensions.

Today, there is almost one pensioner per one working person. Earlier, Labor and Social Protection Minister Alexei Buzu said that in order to have a sustainable pension system, there should be at least one pensioner for every three working people.
