50% of the country’s labor force is concentrated in Chisinau

In Moldova, half of the workers are concentrated in the capital - here the salaries are twice as high as in the districts, Logos Press reports.

Thus, the average monthly nominal gross salary per employee amounted to 13,990 lei in 2024, increasing by 14.6% (by 1,780.8 lei). In real terms, the growth amounted to 9.5%.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, there were 740,900 employees at the end of last year, 1% more than in 2023. The average number of employees during the year was 632.4 thousand. At the same time, 29.7 thousand vacancies were registered, equivalent to 3.9% of the total number of jobs.

Half of all the country’s employees are concentrated in the capital, in the municipality of Balti – almost 6%. However, only in Chisinau municipality the salaries exceeded the national average – 16,955 lei. The lowest incomes were recorded in the districts of Briceni (9,433 lei), Glodeni (9,888 lei) and Riscani (9,982 lei).

The highest salaries were recorded in the fields of information and communication – 35,228 lei (2.5 times higher than the national average); financial and insurance activity – 25,636 lei; energy production and supply – 21,212 lei. The lowest salaries were in catering and hotel business – 8,907 lei; agriculture – 9,091 lei; art and leisure – 10,157 lei.

Above-average growth (+20) was observed in traditionally low-paid fields, such as hotel services and catering. Salaries in traditionally high-paying areas (IT, finance) grew slower – by 8-10%, but continue to maintain a significant gap in the overall economy.

The average gross salary of women amounted to 12,788 lei, it is still lower than that of men (15,336 lei) – by 16.6% less. The biggest differences are observed in IT and communications – almost up to +40% in favor of men. The spheres with a “female face” remain health care, where every eighth employee is a woman, education (77%) and services (69%).

As for the number of employees, the majority work in trade (18%), industry (15.7%) and education (14.3%).
