The typewriter as an artifact

The special thematic exhibition “Typewriter and Typewriting” presents ten exhibits that tell the history of the typewriter, which today has become an almost forgotten artifact. This mechanical device that revolutionized the world of communications was invented more than 50 times, in various shapes and sizes, and it was only in 1868 that it was patented. The exhibition is open through October 20 in the Department of Antique and Rare Books.

History of the book

During the whole year 2025, the Library’s Museum of Books hosts the thematic exhibition “Cultural Heritage”, which introduces the history of the book and printing in Moldova and the Eastern European region. The exhibition presents ancient tools and writing utensils, manuscripts and ancient engravings of great value, kept in the Department of Ancient and Rare Books, as well as modern bibliophile editions. The exhibition also reflects the activities of scribes and calligraphers of the Middle Ages.

The Double Hypostasis of Saint-Exupéry

Until September 14, you can visit the exhibition “Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Writer of the Sky”, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of the great French humanist of the mid-20th century.

“Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was a pilot and a writer, and this double hypostasis shaped him as a person,” comments Elina Bolgarina, Head of the Department of Literature of the World of the National Library. – He made his debut in 1930 with the book “Southern Courier”, followed by “Night Flight”, “Planet of People”, “Military Pilot”, “The Little Prince”, and posthumously published “Citadel”. The writer said that flying an airplane allows you to look at the world from a different point of view, and this is reflected in many of his works. He believed that thanks to the profession of a pilot, a person can prove something to himself not only by bravery and courage, but also by a creative act.

His books were a discovery at that time: the world of aviation was not very well known, and they are full of not only fascinating details about flights, but also deep meanings”.

The exhibition includes works by Saint-Exupéry in French and in translations into several languages, monographs devoted to his life and work, articles published in the national and foreign press, illustrative materials, etc.
