Employment standards for young people will be adjusted

This is one of the norms prescribed in the draft law of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection on amending a number of regulations, including the Labor Code, proposed for public consultation. It includes several new norms for workers under the age of 18 in the labor market.

There are other requirements and restrictions on the use of young people’s labor. For example, for workers aged 15 to 16, the duration of daily rest between the end of the working day and the start of work the next day cannot be less than 14 consecutive hours. And for workers between 16 and 18 years of age – not less than 12 consecutive hours.

Another norm states that the total duration of work of workers under 18 years of age employed by several employers shall not exceed the norms established by the Labor Code. In particular, in Moldova, a reduced working time is established for workers under the age of 18. For young people from 14 to 16 years old it should not exceed 24 hours per week, from 16 to 18 years old – 35 hours per week. At the same time, the duration of daily work for young people under 16 years of age cannot be more than 5 hours, and from 16 to 18 years of age – 7 hours.

In addition, the draft provides for the inclusion of new provisions in the Labor Protection Act concerning persons under the age of 18. The employer will be obliged to provide young workers with the necessary measures to protect their safety and health, taking into account such risks as lack of experience, lack of awareness, etc. The employer must implement the above-mentioned measures. At the same time, he must implement the above measures based on an assessment of the risks associated with their work.
