The initiative is a response to the main demographic challenges faced by Moldova. In particular, migration and population ageing, and aims to stimulate the development of demographic projections and scenarios.
“In the context of accelerated demographic change, it is crucial to invest in understanding these phenomena by improving the processes of data collection, analysis and use for informed public policy. UNFPA has been supporting Moldova in these efforts for many years to strengthen demographic resilience. Quality data management is a central pillar in this regard,” said Karina Nersesian, UNFPA Representative in Moldova, during the online signing ceremony.
The partnership will facilitate cooperation between Moldovan and Austrian researchers through study visits, training, joint analysis and research. These activities will develop the skills of young demographers and improve the quality of data-driven public policies in key areas such as migration, education, employment, health and social protection.
“IIASA has internationally recognized expertise in demographic modeling, long-term projections and integrated scenarios that incorporate social, economic and environmental factors. This experience, gained through decades of global research and applied in many countries, will now contribute to the creation of more effective public policies in the Republic of Moldova,” said Karen Lips, IIASA Deputy Director General.
“The strategic partnership with UNFPA and IIASA represents an important opportunity for Moldovan researchers to access international expertise and utilize state-of-the-art analytical tools,” confirmed Prof. Alexandru Stratan, Rector of ASEM.
This initiative is part of UNFPA’s broader efforts to promote data-driven management in Moldova by facilitating the linking of national institutions with international centers of excellence. The project is supported by the initiative “Strengthening governance based on reliable and disaggregated demographic data for central and local governments”, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and co-financed and implemented by UNFPA Moldova.
