The functions of the cultural mediator also include helping foreigners to access public services, supporting them in the process of social integration, promoting intercultural dialogue and facilitating cohesion between the host community and the visitors.
The General Inspectorate for Migration (GIM), in partnership with the Agency for Interethnic Relations and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova, organized a consultation meeting on defining the function of a cultural mediator. The event took place at the House of Nationalities and gathered more than 30 participants: leaders of ethno-cultural organizations, NGO representatives, migration experts, and decision-makers.
It was noted at the meeting that Moldovan society is becoming more and more ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse. And in this context, the integration of foreigners in a fair and sustainable manner should be an unconditional priority for the authorities, as the promotion of intercultural dialogue, equal access to services and prevention of social exclusion are key elements for a solidarity community. The establishment of a cultural mediation service therefore becomes a practical and strategic necessity.
Participants in the consultations emphasized the urgent need to establish this service in the Republic of Moldova, based on the experience gained in working with foreigners and displaced persons from Ukraine, especially in the context of the crisis in Ukraine. Ethnic communities expressed their full support and willingness to contribute to the process of developing and implementing cultural mediation mechanisms.
