Karol Nawrocki

Poland’s new president is 42 years old. He is a historian, director of the Institute of National Memory, and is known for his nationalist views. He was supported in the election campaign by the conservative Law and Justice party, to which outgoing President Andrzej Duda belongs.

Karol Nawrocki won almost 51% of the vote, beating his rival, Warsaw Mayor and nominee of the pro-European Civic Platform party, Rafal Trzaskowski, by a narrow margin. This outcome was a blow to the coalition of right-liberal Donald Tusk, given the role of the president in Poland, who has the power to veto laws.

Poland’s state news agency PAP noted that the second round of the presidential election saw a record turnout of 71.63%. The number of invalid votes, according to PKW, did not exceed one percent and did not affect the election results.
