As reported by the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, in 2023 the EBRD Governing Council adopted a number of changes to strengthen the bank’s position and its ability to provide financial assistance where needed. Adoption of these changes is Moldova’s obligation as a member of the EBRD.
The amendment to the Agreement Establishing the EBRD provides for an increase in the Bank’s authorized capital through a combined contribution of €4 billion from all members.
Moldova will allocate 4 million 030 thousand euros from the state budget for the capital increase in the EBRD, which will be transferred in 5 installments of 806 thousand euros annually in 2025-2029. As a result, Moldova will continue to benefit from the EBRD’s investment opportunities and financial support.
Among the amendments to the agreement are the gradual expansion of the EBRD’s operations to sub-Saharan Africa and Iraq, as well as the abolition of legal capital limits for the bank’s current operations.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development was founded in 1990 and currently has 75 member countries. Our country joined the EBRD in 1992.
Since then, the Bank has become one of Moldova’s main partners, supporting Moldova’s development through investments in infrastructure, energy efficiency, transportation, agriculture, environment and other important sectors. To date, the EBRD has financed 179 projects in Moldova, with a total value of €2.46 billion. In total, there are 69 active projects in Moldova with a total value of €1.3 billion. The EBRD also provides technical expertise to help the Moldovan authorities develop more effective institutions and better public policies.
