
According to the State Property Agency, this payment was made within the framework of the intergovernmental agreement on the acquisition of a land plot for the new headquarters of the US Embassy in Moldova (on the site of the former Republican Stadium), signed in 2024.
The total amount to be paid by the American side for the transfer of ownership of the land plot is 18 million euros (approximately 351.5 million lei).
Also, the US government will reimburse the Moldovan government for the documented expenses related to the expropriation procedure, including compensation to the owners of buildings on the land plot where the construction of the new embassy building will be carried out, on the basis of the same agreement. A total of 7.5 million euros (about 146 million lei) is envisaged for this purpose.
The State Property Agency initiates the process of drafting a governmental decree on expropriation, in accordance with the Law on Declaration of Public Utility and National Interest for the construction works of the new headquarters of the US Embassy in Moldova.
The agreement between the two governments on the land plot for the construction of the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau was signed on July 12, 2019, and ratified by the Moldovan Parliament on May 5, 2022.The ratification granted the right to acquire the land for construction. And on February 20, 2025, MPs voted in final reading the Law on the Declaration of Public Utility and National Interest of the Construction Works of the New Headquarters of the U.S. Embassy in Moldova.
