Moldova’s debts exceed $10 billion

Moldova's foreign debt increased by $94.5 million and reached $10.2 billion by the end of 2024. Such data on the debt was presented by the National Bank of Moldova in the balance of payments for last year.

Moldova’s debts exceed $10 billion

In contrast, relative to the country’s GDP, total debt decreased by 4.4 percentage points to 56.1% from 2023.

Moldova’s long-term external debt amounted to $8bn, increasing by 4.8% compared to the situation at the end of 2023, when it amounted to $7.4bn. At the same time, short-term debt decreased by 10% to $2.4bn. Their share in the total debt amounted to 76.3% and 23.7%, respectively.

As for the structure of the external state debt by creditors, the main source of borrowed funds for Moldova is the IMF with a share of 31.7% ($1 billion 364.67 million) of the total amount. In second place is the World Bank Group – 25.2% ($1 billion 085.68 million). In third place is the European Investment Bank – 10.5% ($453.45 million).
