On Wednesday, August 19, hundreds of labor union activists gathered at the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau for a protest organized by the Federation of Education and Science Unions (FESU).

The unions are demanding that the pay raise be enshrined in regulatory acts and that it be effectively implemented starting September 1. They are also insisting on higher and more predictable incomes for workers in the education and science sectors.

“We are not asking for privileges or special treatment. We are merely demanding that the commitments made be fulfilled,” said FPOE Chairman Gennady Donos.

In a resolution adopted at the rally, the unions demanded that the authorities present, as soon as possible, a specific mechanism for raising salaries and specify the amount of the increase.

The FPON warned that if the demands are not met and the commitments made are not honored, the union will continue its protests and reserves the right to use all forms of union action provided for by law until concrete decisions and commitments are received from the authorities.

Against this backdrop, the government announced that the pay raise for teachers would be implemented not on September 1, 2026, but on January 1, 2027. Until then, the authorities promise to provide public sector employees with compensatory payments.
