Rising fuel prices

Today, prices for the main types of fuel have risen quite significantly.

The National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) has published new maximum prices for gasoline and diesel fuel, which will take effect on August 20.

The maximum price for AI-95 gasoline will be 30 lei and 37 bani (25 bani more than today) per liter, and for diesel fuel—32.37 lei (39 bani more) per liter.

Unfortunately, this appears to be just the beginning of the rally.

Diesel prices in Europe continue to rise and are already close to March’s highs, which even exceed the prices seen during the 2022 crisis.

According to data from the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, on August 18, the wholesale price of diesel fuel stood at $1,304 per metric ton. This is nearly $76 higher than the record price set in 2022 and only $114 below the March high.

This turnaround—following prices that had fallen as low as $869 in June—is once again due to the Iranian crisis (which the U.S. president has reignited by refusing to negotiate with Iran yesterday) and the halt in diesel exports from Russia. The conflict between the U.S. and Iran appears to be entering a new phase of escalation, with no end in sight. This significantly restricts not only oil supplies from the Middle East but also petroleum products.

In the spot market, diesel prices are even higher. For example, Poland’s Orlen, which operates refineries in Poland, the Baltic states, and the Czech Republic, was offering diesel at $1,787 per metric ton on August 18.
