“Today, at my direction, Dr. Mehmet Oz [an American physician of Turkish descent and host of the popular television show “The Dr. Oz Show”] announced that Medicaid will no longer fund sex reassignment surgeries and hormone therapy for minors. “We are not going to pay for our innocent children to be subjected to these barbaric surgeries and practices, which inflict unimaginable and irreversible harm on their young bodies,” Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.
Trump also stated that over the past year and a half, dozens of hospitals in the U.S. have already stopped providing so-called gender-affirming care. He expressed hope that other medical facilities would follow suit.
The ban applies to puberty-blocking drugs, hormone treatments, and surgical procedures. The new regulations will take effect on October 13.
Moldova Agrees with Trump
The legislation of the Republic of Moldova (including the Family Code and laws on civil status records) protects the rights of minors, and any medical interventions of this kind for children under 18 are prohibited.
Parents or legal guardians do not have the right to consent to sex reassignment surgery or hormone therapy for minors intended for gender transition.
Procedures related to the legal recognition of gender transition and the amendment of documents (civil status records) through court decisions are available in Moldova exclusively to persons who have reached the age of 18.
