Pork products will be tested for meat content if customs officials have any doubts

Certain pork products imported into Moldova will be sent to a laboratory to determine their meat and fat content if customs authorities have doubts about the accuracy of their tariff classification.

The procedure will work as follows: if customs officials suspect that the goods do not correspond to the declared tariff code, the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) will take a sample and send it to an official laboratory. There, the product will be analyzed to determine its meat content based on nitrogen and fat levels.

Once the laboratory analysis results are received, the Customs Service will decide whether to uphold the tariff code declared by the importer or to change it.

However, not all meat products and not all shipments will be inspected. The procedure will apply to certain types of pork products, including ham and ham cuts, shoulder and shoulder cuts, as well as other pork products and canned pork.

It is important to note that the procedure is not intended for a general verification of product composition or the accuracy of label information, but exclusively for customs classification—to determine which tariff category a specific product should fall under.

The draft was reviewed at a meeting of the state secretaries of the ministries and will subsequently be presented at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.
