Moldova’s foreign minister addressed a meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense (SEDE). He presented the results of the implementation of the EU–Republic of Moldova Partnership in the field of security and defense, and also discussed measures to strengthen the country’s resilience with EU support.
Particular attention was paid to the assistance provided through the European Peace Facility (EPF) and the activities of the EU Partnership Mission in Moldova (EUPM).
The EU reaffirmed its support for strengthening Moldova’s security
According to the foreign minister, the recently approved €120 million support package under the European Peace Facility is an important signal of European solidarity and will enable the country to continue developing its defense capabilities.
The minister also noted the opening of negotiations on Cluster 6, “External Relations,” as part of Moldova’s accession process to the European Union. He said this reflects the republic’s progress in the areas of foreign policy, security, and defense.
“The security of the Republic of Moldova is part of European security. Today, our country has significantly greater capabilities for self-defense than it did a few years ago. We continue to strengthen our resilience with the support of the European Union and to implement the reforms necessary to advance the process of European integration,” Mihai Popșoi is quoted as saying on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense, in turn, called Moldova one of the EU’s closest partners in the Eastern Neighborhood and reaffirmed the European Parliament’s support for the development of a security partnership and the republic’s continued European course.
