Inspectors discovered hazardous medical waste and mercury contamination

An unscheduled inspection by the Environmental Protection Inspectorate uncovered approximately 20 cubic meters of illegally stored medical waste and localized mercury contamination. The Moldovan authorities described the situation as “extremely serious.”

According to Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder, the bags that were discovered contained heavy metals, solid and liquid medications, used syringes, and other items posing a high potential risk—both to the public and to the environment.

“Measures are currently being taken to seal off and secure the contaminated premises, and an investigation is underway to identify all those responsible and take the measures provided for by law. I will provide details as soon as the investigation is complete,” the minister said.
