“Historic” EU–Armenia summit to take place in Yerevan

Yerevan to host ‘historic’ EU-Armenia summit

An EU-Armenia summit will be held in Yerevan on May 4-5, where the sides will discuss deepening bilateral cooperation, regional security and key international challenges. This will be the first bilateral summit in the history of Armenia-EU relations and is expected to give a new impetus to the development of strategic partnership between the sides. Observers and international media have already described the upcoming event as "historic".

The European Union will be represented at the summit by EU Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Armenia will be represented by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The meeting is expected to be an important milestone in the development of EU-Armenia relations. The summit is aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation, as well as strengthening peace, connectivity and economic development in the South Caucasus region,” the news agency writes. News.am. The publication notes that one of the key topics of the summit will be the situation in the South Caucasus. The leaders will discuss progress towards peace and stability, including the process of normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The EU earlier welcomed the initialing of a peace treaty and the signing of a political declaration between the parties as an important step towards a long-term settlement of the conflict.

The EU is Armenia’s largest donor

During the talks, the leaders will discuss expanding cooperation in areas such as energy, transportation, digital technologies and infrastructure connectivity. Special attention will be paid to current global challenges, including the situation around Ukraine and the consequences of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

At the end of the summit, it is planned to adopt a joint statement and sign a number of documents aimed at further developing the EU-Armenia partnership.

It is specified that the European Union is Armenia’s largest donor. Within the framework of the Sustainability and Growth Plan for 2024-2027, 270 million euros of funding is envisaged to support the reforms and development of the economy. In addition, within the framework of the Global Gateway initiative, EU investments in Armenia may reach 2.5 billion euros.

In the field of security, the EU is strengthening its presence in Armenia. In April 2026, a decision was taken to establish a new EU civilian mission (EUPM Armenia) aimed at improving the country’s resilience and ability to withstand modern threats, including cyber attacks and external interference. Earlier, in 2023, an EU observer mission (EUMA) was launched, operating in the border regions.

Additionally, since 2024, the EU has allocated €30 million through the European Peace Facility to support the Armenian armed forces and enhance the protection of civilians in crisis situations.

In December 2025, a new EU-Armenia Strategic Agenda was adopted with more ambitious cooperation goals, especially in the areas of economic development, security and sustainability.
