The statement reads as follows:
“Given the disrespect that China has shown to global markets, I hereby raise the duty levied by the United States on China to 125%. The decision is effective immediately.
Hopefully, in the near future, China will realize that its days of ripping off the United States and other countries are coming to an end. This is no longer acceptable and unacceptable.
On the other hand, based on the fact that over 75 countries have contacted representatives of the United States, including the Department of Commerce, the Department of the Treasury, and the Trade Representative’s Office, to negotiate solutions to the issues under discussion regarding trade, trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-tariff restrictions, and that these countries (at my strong recommendation), have not taken any retaliatory action against the United States, I have authorized the use of a 90-day PATH and a substantially reduced reciprocal tariff in the amount of a Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Also on April 9, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Doina Nistor met with 40 domestic exporters to the United States to analyze the impact of the new duty rates by the United States that were applied globally, including Moldovan goods.
Doina Nistor said that the government wants to turn this challenge into an opportunity. The ministry will assess the impact of the US duties on each specific product and will propose an adaptation to the new tariffs. At the same time, negotiations have been launched with European partners, where three quarters of the goods produced in Moldova are exported, and experts are analyzing alternative markets for the products.
We hope that Moldova is among the 75 countries that have appealed to the US authorities to reduce the 31% customs duty rate, and that our country will also benefit from the 90-day pause and the 10% tariff announced by Trump.
It should be recalled that Moldova’s exports to the United States in 2024 amounted to $90 million (2.5% of the total volume), while imports amounted to $135 million (1.5% of the total volume of imports).
