This document formally confirms the support of European partners at a time when accession negotiations are opening in Luxembourg on the first cluster of chapters, covering fundamental values, judicial reform, and the fight against corruption.
During a joint press conference, Marcel Spatar, Chair of the Committee on European Integration, emphasized that this partnership is a recognition of the progress made in reforming the justice system and combating corruption.
“We welcome the fact that our European partners recognize these successes and support the advancement of the accession process. We are aware that this path is being navigated in a complex geopolitical environment characterized by disinformation, external interference, and security threats. This is precisely why it is important to maintain unity and a firm commitment to the Republic of Moldova’s European course. We need the support of European countries. We will continue to advance the necessary reforms, strengthen state institutions, and maintain the momentum of the transformations we have begun,” Spatar said.
European officials reaffirmed their commitment to providing ongoing technical and political assistance, calling the Republic of Moldova’s European course a geopolitical imperative of crucial importance for regional stability.
Greece: European Integration as a Factor in Regional Stability
Yannis Plakiotakis, Deputy Speaker of the Greek Parliament, emphasized that the accession process is not only an investment in a prosperous future for the Republic of Moldova but also a geopolitical imperative for regional stability.
“We recognize the necessity of the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union; this is a geopolitical imperative. At the same time, each candidate country must be assessed on the basis of its own merits and compliance with the enlargement criteria,” he said.
Portugal: Recognition of Merit
Edite Estrela, Chair of Portugal’s Committee on European Affairs, noted that the country’s commitment to the European agenda deserves recognition.
“The Republic of Moldova’s level of preparedness reflects the tremendous efforts made by the government, parliament, local authorities, and society as a whole. Portugal supports Moldova in this process. We look forward to the day when the Republic of Moldova takes its place among the full member states of the European Union,” she said.
Italy: “Moldova is Europe”
In turn, Alessandro Giglio Vigna, chairman of the Committee on European Affairs of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, confirmed his country’s readiness to provide political and technical assistance, emphasizing the need to counter external interference that hinders Moldova’s European course.
“We are ready to continue helping you, both politically and technically. Moldova is Europe. And in Italy, we believe that this is becoming a reality,” the official concluded.
The joint declaration also received support from representatives of the Croatian Parliament, who will sign it at a later date.
