A letter cited by the Latvian website bb.lv explains that the Cabinet of Ministers received a petition from several members of the Saeima (parliament) dated April 1, 2026. They demanded a review of the current rules regarding goods from Russia and Belarus that are prohibited from being imported into Latvia, as well as a ban on a number of other specific goods.

The plan is to include the following items on the list, in particular: live animals, fish, and fish products; tea, spices, flour mill products, oilseed crops, vegetable oils, and other agricultural and feed products, as well as oilseed meal and other solid residues from sunflower seed processing.

As it turns out, some of these goods were not previously subject to the import ban, but Latvian farmers have had enough time to find alternative sources of raw materials.

The amendments have already been submitted for public comment. Once the consultation process is complete, they will be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers for consideration in accordance with established procedures.
