“Every decision I have made has been driven by my desire to put the country I love above all else. That is why I am stepping down,” RBC quotes Starmer as saying.
The publication also provides further details from the British prime minister’s statement. He announced that nominations for the new Labour leader will open on July 9 and close before the summer parliamentary recess. This will ensure that the new leader takes office before Parliament reconvenes in September, Starmer added.
The prime minister added that two years ago he experienced “the proudest moment of his life” when the first Labour government in 14 years came to power. He recalled that six years ago he took the helm of a party that was “politically, financially, and morally bankrupt,” and was told that “winning a majority in the election was impossible.”
The day before, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the British prime minister’s resignation, stating that he believes Starmer’s main failures were in the areas of immigration and energy.
