The first tranche of funding—524.7 million euros—is expected to be disbursed in the coming weeks, according to the Latvian website bb.lv.
These funds will help accelerate the modernization of the armed forces, the development of border security, and the civil defense system. In addition, the money is intended to support the development of Latvia’s defense industry and the economy as a whole.
It is important to note that SAFE is not a grant program. It is a preferential loan that Latvia will have to repay. Therefore, the authorities emphasize that the investments must yield long-term returns in the form of new production facilities, technologies, and jobs.
European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius noted that Latvia is playing an increasingly prominent role in the pan-European security system. In particular, the country is participating in the creation of a surveillance system for Europe’s eastern flank—from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.
This project will bring together the region’s border states and will become one of the EU’s largest joint defense projects in recent years.
