Producers of artisanal and agri-food products will benefit from a European protection system

Parliament has passed a law that will help farmers and artisans protect the uniqueness of their products. This applies to products with a “geographical indication”—for example, when cheese or jam is named after the region where it is produced using traditional recipes. Previously, obtaining such official recognition was extremely difficult due to red tape, but the new rules simplify the process.

The main innovation of the law is that manufacturers will be able to form groups and independently ensure that their products are not counterfeited. They will no longer need to constantly rely on government assistance, as they will be empowered to protect their own brands. For small producers, the registration process will become much easier: now they can simply submit a declaration under their own responsibility, which saves a significant amount of time. A special commission is being established to resolve disputes between entrepreneurs, so as not to drag out cases in court.

In addition, the law introduces modern environmental and ethical production standards. This is an important requirement that will allow Moldovan farmers and artisans to legally and successfully sell their goods in the European Union market.

The document will enter into force on April 2, 2027.
