Moldova is studying France’s experience in developing tram systems

Representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR), led by Minister Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolya, familiarized themselves on June 10 in France with the operation of modern tram systems, including issues related to the design, operation, and financing of urban transport infrastructure. The experience gained can be used in the development of sustainable urban mobility projects in Moldova.

 From Design to Operation

During a visit to SYSTRA, one of the world’s leading companies in the field of transportation engineering and urban mobility, the Moldovan delegation was presented with models for creating modern tram systems—from the design phase and integration into the urban environment to operation, maintenance, and infrastructure management.

The meeting participants also examined examples of completed projects in various cities around the world and solutions aimed at improving the efficiency of public transportation.

How the Paris tram network is organized

In the second part of the program, MIDR representatives met with the management of the Paris public transport operator RATP. The parties discussed the organization of tram line operations, traffic safety issues, passenger flow management, and interaction between the transport operator and municipal authorities.

Particular attention was paid to the practical aspects of operating a modern tram network and the mechanisms for coordination between the operator and transport authorities.

The delegation also visited the T3a and T3b lines, where they examined solutions for ensuring stop accessibility, passenger information, tram priority at intersections, and the integration of transport infrastructure into the urban environment.

Focus on Infrastructure and Financing

A separate item on the agenda was a visit to the Ladoumègue depot, where Moldovan experts studied the organization of rolling stock maintenance, the operations of the dispatch center, and issues related to managing a modern transport network.

In the coming days, the delegation will continue its work in France and Belgium. The program includes discussions on financing mechanisms for infrastructure and urban mobility projects, as well as meetings with European officials responsible for transport policy.

For Moldova, the development of sustainable public transport remains one of the key elements of urban infrastructure modernization. Studying the experience of Paris and Strasbourg allows for an assessment of modern approaches to organizing transport systems that combine transport efficiency, reduced traffic on the road network, and improved quality of the urban environment.
