Foreign Affairs Committee of the Moldovan Parliament

The Foreign Policy Committee of the Moldovan Parliament today approved an advisory opinion authorizing our country’s delegation to conduct these negotiations.

The document will create the necessary foundation for implementing infrastructure projects aimed at improving transport links between the two countries. Among them is a road bridge between Ungheni in the Republic of Moldova and the town of the same name in Romania.

The new agreement will replace the document signed in 2022, which served as the basis for the start of construction work on the border road bridge. At the same time, it will expand bilateral cooperation through the implementation of a coordinated border control mechanism, which will help optimize cross-border traffic.

The agreement will also facilitate access to preferential financing from the European Union. The project will involve the development of the final section of the A8 motorway (Târgu Mureș–Iași–Ungheni) in Romania and the first section of the Ungheni–Chișinău–Odessa motorway in Moldova. At the same time, there are plans to develop an intermodal rail terminal in Bărești.

Moldova’s connection to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) is one of our country’s priorities, and the bridge across Ungheni will provide a direct link to the Romanian motorway network and, indirectly, to the European transport infrastructure. The project will facilitate the movement of people and goods, bring the two banks of the Prut River closer together, and create new opportunities for trade and economic development.

After signing, the agreement must be ratified by Parliament.
