Winter moisture reserves in Moldova’s soil may exceed the norm for the first time in several years

Several meteorological resources in Europe forecast precipitation for Moldova in the second half of February totaling more than 25-30 mm. This exceeds the average norm for the last month of winter, which has been observed in the country over the past few years, Logos Press reported.

According to Mihail Vronschi, an expert of the National Seed Research and Production Center of Moldova, in the situation of the current climate transformation, the amount of precipitation for the winter period at the level of 90 mm or more can be considered normal for agricultural production. By the beginning of February, Moldova was already close to this level. Accordingly, abundant precipitation in February may not only create prerequisites for a good winter crop, but also replenish moisture reserves in deep layers of soil, depleted by many years of drought.

At the same time, normal adsorption of melt and rain water in late winter – early spring will be possible if there are no severe frosts and deep soil freezing in February. According to meteorological forecasts, the atmospheric temperature in February is expected to be not below the climatic norm.

As the expert notes, high moisture reserves in the soil after the fall-winter period are very important. However, the harvest of many field crops, including winter crops, depends crucially on precipitation in April and May.
