The corresponding government resolution was approved at a Cabinet meeting on January 22. It replaces the regulatory act in force until December 31, 2025.

The approved volume corresponds to the average annual permissible volume of harvesting in the amount of 344.7 thousand m³ and is calculated on the basis of forest inventory materials, current technical standards and the results of scientific research in the field of forestry.

In the structure of the approved volume, the largest share is made up of acacia stands – 28%, oak (27%), ash (16%), as well as other hardwood and softwood species.

According to the resolution, the purpose of main-use logging is not to increase the volume of harvesting, but to reproduce, preserve and ecologically reconstruct forests.

It should be noted that more than 70% of main-use logging is carried out in the first half of the year, until April 15.

Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder said: “The works will be carried out in a planned and responsible manner, exclusively where it is really necessary. We are talking about overmature, dried-out or disease-affected forests. The respective areas will be gradually restored through natural regeneration or planting young trees adapted to the current climatic conditions. I emphasize: a healthy forest is not formed by itself. Just as a garden needs care to produce a rich harvest, a forest needs sanitation and restoration work to grow healthy. This measure represents an investment in their long-term health. Only well-maintained forests can provide clean air, protect the environment and be a common good for society and a legacy for future generations.”

The ministry assures that it will monitor and severely penalize any illegal logging.
