A close associate of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said a boycott of the tournament would only be considered as a last resort. “We are considering this measure in order to educate Trump on the Greenland issue. For the American president, the tournament is very important,” Jürgen Hardt told Bild.
Earlier Logos Press reported on the growing tension around Greenland, which is in the interests of the United States. The bill on the annexation of Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, was introduced in the US Congress. Trump has repeatedly stated the need to annex Greenland in order to ensure US security towards the Atlantic Ocean.
The World Cup will be held in 16 cities in the United States, Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19, 2026. For the first time, 48 national teams will participate in the tournament.
Germany was one of 42 countries whose teams qualified for the final tournament. The winners of the remaining six places will be announced in March after the European playoff round and intercontinental knockout matches.
