In Romania, the system of road tolls has changed from 2026

Vehicles with a maximum permissible gross weight of more than 3.5 tons will henceforth pay a road toll through an electronic system for each kilometer of the route when using the national road network. As specifies profit.ro, this mechanism is known in official documents as TollRo and represents a transition from a fixed toll sticker to the pay-per-use model already used in many European countries.

To use the system, carriers’ trucks must be equipped with special on-board devices or use officially recognized registration methods. The distance will be calculated automatically and the amount payable will be determined according to the emission class and vehicle category.

Vignettes will continue to apply for cars and vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons. But from 2026, the rules will change in two important ways: the validity periods will be adapted to the new emission class requirements; and payment will be made more flexible by introducing a grace period allowing vignettes to be paid by midnight the day after national roads are used. The change in the payment method is intended to simplify the driver’s interaction with the toll system and reduce the number of cases where fines are applied solely for administrative reasons.
