Despite the fact that the decrease in sales falls in the period from March to September, citrus consumption in Moldova is steadily growing. The biggest jump was recorded in 2018, when 26.6 thousand tons of citrus fruits (worth 400 million lei) were imported into the country – 6 thousand tons more than the year before. This year, the growth rate is maintained, with volumes forecast to increase by 3-5%.
Usually, from the first to the third week of December, citrus fruits in Moldovan chain retailers rise in price by 10-15%.
The leaders of citrus fruit turnover are mandarins (Satsumas variety) – they account for almost one third of supplies. Oranges are in second place, and lemons are in third place. Such exotics as pomelo and Sweetie (Citrus Sweetie), aka “white grapefruit” are in low demand – they are consumed in the country within 15-20 tons per year.
Turkey is the leader among suppliers – it accounts for almost half of citrus imports. Spain, Greece, Egypt and Holland are also among the top five exporters.
