Popshoe to CNN: ‘We believe President Trump wants peace’

“We firmly believe that President Trump wants peace and that he views this bloodshed, which has been going on for nearly four years, as an incredible loss of human life, the destruction of world heritage sites in Ukraine, and the destruction of enormous economic potential. I firmly believe that President Trump is sincere in his desire to bring peace,” said Mykhailo Popshoy.

Deputy Prime Minister called Donald Trump “the president of peace”, noting that he would most of all like to see peace return to Ukraine and our entire region.

“The United States and President Donald Trump, given his commitment to peace, are certainly in the right position to create the necessary conditions for the Kremlin to realize: this prolonged bloodshed must stop. And Ukraine must be assured that its sovereignty and territorial integrity will be respected, of course, taking into account the realities on the ground, which we all know very well,” Mykhailo Popshoy emphasized in an interview for CNN.

The Moldovan Foreign Minister is on a visit to the USA at the same time as Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and MP Ion Groza. They are accompanied by Moldovan Ambassador to the USA Vlad Culminschi. The program of the visit includes meetings with representatives of the Senate and the House of Representatives, the State Department and the White House, as well as with the Moldovan diaspora in Washington, Chicago and North Carolina.

In the historic White House Hall, where President Harry S. Truman signed the Marshall Plan in 1948, Deputy Prime Minister Mihail Popşoi and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu spoke with Andy Baker, Deputy National Security Advisor to the U.S. President, Charles McLaughlin, Director for Europe and Russia at the National Security Council, and Sarah Bibby, Director of the European Department.

“This was a strategic, future-oriented meeting, with in-depth discussions at the highest level on the maintenance of stability and peace in Moldova, in a region that is constantly under geopolitical pressure,” Vlad Culminschi said.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu spoke at meetings with the US officials about “the tremendous progress Moldova has made in recent years on the road to genuine democracy”.

The meetings also focused on cooperation in the energy security field, including the possibilities of American investments in the energy sector, a crucial element of Moldova’s energy independence and economic stability. The speaker thanked the U.S. for its direct assistance in reforms and projects, including the financing of the construction of the Gutinas (Romania) – Straseni (Moldova) power transmission line.

At a meeting with Congressmen Vern Buchanan and Neil Dunn, Senator Lindsey Graham, as well as with the chairman of the Moldova Friendship Group in the House of Representatives, Mike Lawler, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popşoi invited the US officials to visit Moldova “to see the country’s progress and potential on the spot”.
