SEPA saves citizens money

In just one month after our country officially joined SEPA, the volume of transactions to and from Moldova increased by EUR 300 million, exceeding in total EUR 1.3 billion.

These data were provided by the National Bank of Moldova and disseminated by the EU Delegation to Moldova on November 27.

The same statistics show that more than half of the SEPA transactions were carried out by individuals. According to Anca Dragu, head of the NBM, the direct savings resulting from these transactions amount to about 1.4 million euros.

Moldova joined the Single Euro Payments Area on October 6, 2025.

Currently, eight commercial banks from Moldova have officially joined the SEPA system, a payment infrastructure that unites 41 European countries and offers citizens and businesses fast and secure euro transfers with low or even zero fees under the same conditions as within the European Union.

“In terms of transaction costs, we paid around €78,000. Without SEPA, these costs would have amounted to about €1.5 million. In other words, all the people who made payments from Moldova to the 41 SEPA countries and vice versa saved more than 1.4 million euros,” said Anca Dragu, NBM president. – In total, about 1.35 billion euros were transacted. In terms of the number of transactions, 55% were made by individuals.”

“If we consider only commissions, this represents an 18-fold reduction. If we extrapolate these figures for the whole year, we expect savings of about 20 million euros for individuals and about 36-40 million euros for companies,” the NBM head added.
