In the opinion of the NBM governor, the central bank has a significant role in the country’s achievements in the third millennium, especially in recent years. The NBM is always at the forefront of reforms and has a concrete responsibility for the implementation of the Reform Program on the way to European integration, the governor believes.
“European integration is not just a political process, it is a deep transformation of the country’s economic and financial infrastructure. The National Bank of Moldova, in addition to maintaining financial stability, plays an active role in promoting economic and social transformations in the Republic of Moldova. A striking example is the elaboration of the first National Strategy for Financial Inclusion, an inter-institutional cooperation project that will be implemented in the middle of next year,” Ms. Dragu said.
An important indicator of the digitalization of the financial sector according to the European model: in the first quarter of 2025, the volume of non-cash payments exceeded the volume of cash withdrawals for the first time. Among other achievements of the central bank, the governor named the country’s accession to the single euro payment area SEPA from October 6 and the revolution in bank transfers with the launch of the MIA instant payment system in 2024.
The next important goal, according to the NBM governor, will be the regulation of crypto-assets. By June 2027, the regulator will implement a regulatory framework for relevant service providers in accordance with the European MiCA regulation. And by the end of 2026, the central bank will implement measures to improve the quality of credit bureau data, which will make access to private sector financing more predictable and secure.
