The project aims to expand the areas managed in accordance with the principles of sustainable development in the Dniester River basin, one of the most important hydrographic zones for the ecological balance and socio-economic development of Moldova.
The RE-MAP program, using environmentally friendly solutions, aims to restore degraded lands and reduce their pollution, preserve biodiversity and increase resilience to climate change.
“This project marks an important step towards achieving Moldova’s sustainable development goals and fulfilling its regional environmental cooperation commitments. By restoring ecosystems and preventing pollution, we are investing in the health of communities and the sustainability of the country’s environment,” said Ulrich Schmitt, World Bank Group Country Manager for Moldova.
The RE-MAP project is part of a comprehensive regional program “Clean and Healthy Oceans” aimed at combating marine pollution and land degradation in the Black Sea basin. Its implementation will support the Republic of Moldova in restoring natural landscapes, protecting water resources and strengthening the environmental sustainability of rural communities.
The main project components include: restoration of forests and wetlands through afforestation and integrated farming, livestock and forestry systems; harmonization of pollution prevention and sustainable land use policies; strengthening the capacity of institutions and communities to implement and monitor restoration activities; and direct benefits to some 99,200 people, 40% of whom are women, through improved access to natural resources and sustainable economic opportunities.
