The World Games in China opened on August 7 and will last until August 17. More than four thousand athletes from 115 countries are participating in the competitions. The Games will feature competitions in 34 sports not included in the Olympic Games program. The program includes such sports as drone racing, tug of war, canoe marathon, lacrosse and parkour.
The current Games are held for the 14th time, the first time they were held in 1981 in Santa Clara (California, USA). Since 2001, they have been held under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Some sports previously present at the World Games are now represented at the Summer Olympics, including triathlon, breakdancing, taekwondo, and badminton. In 2004, the IOC decided that the presence of a particular sport at the World Games was a factor in its potential inclusion in the Olympic Games program.
Moldova is represented at the World Games by four athletes. Gluhov and Glazunova were the flag bearers at the opening ceremony. Thai boxing fighter Artem Livădari and kickboxer Stanislav Renica also traveled to Chengdu, China.
