In a match that lasted 1 hour and 46 minutes, the 35-year-old Albot did not concede a single set to the 40-year-old famous Swiss tennis player, although he won the second set only on a tie-break. The victory over the winner of three Grand Slam titles and former world number three was unexpected, as Wawrinka is ranked 155th in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) ranking, significantly higher than the Moldovan athlete.
In the second round, Albot will face Italy’s Pierluigi Basile, ranked 831st in the ATP rankings.
Albot has already earned €3,055 for reaching the second round of the tournament.
