The estimate is based on operational data from the Ministry of Agriculture, which is based on reports from district agriculture departments. Industry ministry officials note that information from the field may be sketchy, and more accurate data will be provided by the National Bureau of Statistics. Nevertheless, a significant reduction in the area under corn is a harsh reality.

It is dictated primarily by climate change. Last year, farmers lost most of their crops due to a drought of extreme severity and duration.

Thus, according to the Association of Grain Exporters Agrocereale, with the national average yield of 1.86 tons per hectare, Moldova yielded only about 863 thousand tons. And this is despite the fact that in more or less normal years the harvest exceeded 1.5 million tons.
