In Chisinau chain retailers imported berries are offered cheaper than 100 lei/kg only on promotions. In the wholesale and retail markets of the capital, the spread of prices is greater, but in general, by the middle of May this year strawberries are twice as expensive as at the same moment last year.
According to EastFruit price monitoring, in the first decade of May 2025, the average wholesale price of strawberries in Moldova is at a five-year high for this period of the marketing season. One consolation for local consumers is that in neighboring Ukraine the wholesale price for strawberries is even higher – on average, $5.3/kg, which is uncommon.
Usually, from the first week of May onwards, the wholesale price for strawberries in Moldova decreases sharply – to the range of 35-45 lei/kg. Until this year, the only exception was May 2023, when the price remained at the level of 60 lei/kg for almost the whole month. This year, the anomalous for May increase in strawberry prices provoked another period of cold weather, with night frosts.
As Logos Press reported earlier, according to expert estimates, the damage caused by April frosts to strawberry plantations in Moldova is about 40%.
