In Moldova, women own more bank cards than men (1.9 million pieces against 1.6 million) and make more non-cash payments (139.5 million transactions against 134 million). This was announced by the president of the National Bank, Anca Dragu, during the "Ring the Bell for Gender Equality", in which the financial sector participated.

She noted that the amount of payments made by women is lower than that of men – 82.9 billion lei against 85.8 billion lei. “This may indicate that in some cases financial decisions are made by men. It also reflects the wage gap in Moldova, where women earn, on average, 16% less than men, and this gap is also felt in pensions.”

Dragu believes that gender equality is a must, so the National Bank promotes a fair balance of the working environment. Thus, 64% of the institution’s employees are women. About 53% of the NBM management positions are also held by women.

In total, there are 3.6 million active bank cards in Moldova. In less than five years, Moldovan banks have issued double the volume of cards: back in 2019, there were less than 2 million active cards.

The cards of the international payment system “Master Card WorldWide” are in circulation most of all – there are 2 million of them in Moldova. Visa International is in second place with 1.6 million cards. American Express” cards are used the least: up to 2.3 thousand of them are in circulation.
