The Prime Minister commented on a possible increase in electricity rates

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan stated that it will be possible to assess a potential increase in electricity rates if Energocom or other energy market participants submit proposals that take into account the cost of purchasing electricity. He noted that he is not yet ready to discuss a possible rate increase.

“We need to understand what’s happening in the regional electricity market. We’re all aware of the latest news. There has never been a drought like this in our part of Europe. The Danube has become very shallow. This means that the nuclear power plants on the Danube, as well as the large hydroelectric plants, are generating less electricity. And this, in turn, is driving up the cost of electricity. This is a serious challenge for us,” Tofan said.

The prime minister noted that the growth in electricity production from renewable sources and the expansion of energy storage capacity are helping to partially offset the situation on the market.

“The positive aspect is that we are seeing very significant growth in the renewable energy sector, as well as good progress in the development of energy storage systems, including rechargeable batteries. This allows us to balance the situation somewhat. I am not yet ready to discuss a possible increase in electricity prices. When Energocom or other energy market participants submit the relevant requests, we will review them,” said Tofan.

The statement came after Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu said that an increase in electricity rates could not be ruled out. According to him, the final decision will depend on the average cost of purchasing electricity.
