MPs Haik Vartanyan and Olga Ursu have introduced a bill in Parliament that provides for financial and administrative support for families, the creation of a Repatriation Support Fund, and the launch of the “Repatriere.gov.md” online platform.
Citing data from diplomatic missions, the authors note that 450–650 Moldovan citizens die abroad each year under various circumstances. In their view, this situation creates a legislative gap that must be addressed through a clear, predictable, and accessible mechanism for citizens.
The government, however, does not support the bill. According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection’s review, the new mechanism could lead to double compensation for the same expenses and an overlap of responsibilities among government agencies. It also notes that there is insufficient financial justification for the costs of establishing a new fund and an electronic platform.
Currently, under the law, families are eligible to receive compensation amounting to 50% of their transportation expenses, but not exceeding 50,000 lei. For 2026, 10 million lei has been allocated for this purpose.
