Party Chairman Dumitru Roibu points out that the five-year term of the CEC members expires in September, and this milestone should be accompanied by consultations regarding its future composition.

In accordance with democratic practice, oversight bodies are headed by the parliamentary opposition to ensure the balance and impartiality of democratic processes. The absence of such oversight undermines citizens’ trust in the electoral process.

“In Moldova, the rule that oversight bodies—the Court of Auditors, the Central Election Commission, and other institutions—were headed by representatives of the parliamentary opposition used to be in effect. Today, PAS holds a majority in the CEC—six members. We believe—and this is also the view of European institutions and international organizations—that such a situation allows for abuse and undermines democratic norms,” stated Dumitru Roibu.

However, the authorities have not yet provided information about the future members of the CEC nor have they initiated consultations regarding their appointment.

“We are wondering who will become the next members of the Central Election Commission. Will they be the same people who have served for the past five years? And why haven’t parliamentary consultations been initiated regarding the appointment of CEC members and their nominations?” the party leader asked.
