She clarified that Vasile Tofan’s new government had included this provision in its governing program. At the same time, the minister emphasized that any increase in the minimum wage would be implemented in light of the business environment’s capacity and stability.
The minimum wage rate that will be in effect next year has not yet been determined. As the minister noted, this issue will be discussed in the fall with labor unions and employer associations.
As Logos Press previously reported, against the backdrop of the continuing rise in the cost of living, labor unions have once again called for raising the minimum wage to 8,700 lei in 2027. According to European standards, this corresponds to 50% of the projected average monthly wage across the economy.
They presented their position at a meeting of the tripartite National Commission for Consultation and Collective Bargaining. At the same time, the labor unions are calling on the government to set the minimum wage for 2027 in advance.
In this context, the minister noted that the minimum wage is the state-guaranteed minimum level of pay for a full workday; it is not a baseline benchmark for wages in the economy. Its purpose is to ensure a competitive level of income in the labor market.
